Airfield Finsterwalde (german: flugplatz Finsterwalde, ICAO: EDAS) was founded in 1932.
The founding of the airfield had strong support from the city counsil, who hoped it would bring Finsterwalde an airport to boost the cities economy.
In an effort to put Finsterwalde on the aviation maps they named the airfield 'Airport'.
Many luftwaffe pilots of WW-II learned to fly gliders here before moving on to front line aircraft.

After the war flying continued, the club even managed to obtain an old warplane to tow gliders to the air.
But after construction of the Berlin Wall and the Iron Curtain flying became restricted to approved people only, because of the risk they might flee.
As a result only a handful of pilots remained.
Since the reunification of Germany the number of pilots is picking up again, and the airfield has been renovated (after having been abused by excavators to dig in gas-pipelines).
It is now not only opened to gliders, but also to small general aviation aircraft, small helicopters and ULVs.
