Middenmeer Airfield (Dutch: Vliegveld Middenmeer) is a small airfield in the town of Middenmeer, in the Wieringermeer municipality in the province of Noord-Holland.
It is just southeast of the city Den Helder.
During the beginning of the Second World War a military airfield of the same name existed just across the canal on the extreme southern tip of the airfield. The current airfield, which only shares the name, is used exclusively by ultralight aviation, with the short grass runway not being able to support heavier aircraft. The airfield is owned by the Flying Club (Dutch: Vliegclub) Wieringermeer, which formed in 2003 from a merger of the 'Vliegclub Wieringermeer' and the Microlight Aircraft Flying Club 'Noord Holland Noord'. The latter had already been operating from so-called 'Article 14 fields' in the region of Hoorn and Heerhugowaard, which blocked the aspirations of 'Vliegclub Wieringermeer' to have their own field.
Local and provincial government essentially told 'Wieringermeer' there were sufficient airfields available in the area. When the two clubs consulted with each other they soon recognised they would both benefit if they combined forces. Outstanding requests for 'Article-14' fields were withdrawn, and soon the road was clear for construction of the new airfield. On Ascension Day 2003 the new airfield was opened.
Only a month later the airfield was closed again by court order, after a local resident had complained about improper procedures having been followed when the local government issued permits. It took 2 years of procedures before the airfield reopened for the duration of a proper permit; 5 years. The airfield reopened on 30 April 2006. Today, the airfield is still open.
