Glider club 'Den Helder' was founded in December 1955 and until 1998 it resided at the local Naval Air Station 'De Kooij' just south of Den Helder.
Increased traffic at De Kooij by off shore helicopter operators, business flights and the Navy itself meant the glider club had to look elsewhere for their operation.
They found a good location in the nearby Wieringermeer polder

Their airfield consists of a single runway and a hangar building with cantena and workshop.
Besides towing aircraft by winch the airfield occasionally uses the services of a former RNLAF Piper Cub.
